Volunteer Event Organizer
The Society for Ritual Arts is seeking an enthusiastic, detail-oriented and outgoing individual to become our Event Organizer. You must have experience organizing events for small to medium sized organizations, preferably in the fields of academia, art/music/performance and/or nonprofit. Experience organizing annual festivals or conferences preferred. You should also have an interest in ritual arts. Subjects that our community members are interested in run the gamut from shamanism to consciousness studies, spiritual healing, environmental stewardship, and international activism for religious freedom–not to mention spirituality-themed music, art and performance. Any and all faiths welcome! We even have atheists on the team. We are globally-minded and work with artists and scholars from very diverse backgrounds.
Our first major event is coming up in January and you will be organizing it with input from the Advisory Board. It will be hosted in the San Francisco Bay Area, so you should live in the area or have the ability to travel there for the event. Other events, including an annual conference/festival will occur once or twice a year in locations yet to be determined, and between events your workload will be minimal.
This is a volunteer position for the time being, but we are growing fast and making some big changes with plans to transition this role into a paid position within the next two years. For the right person, this could be a role that helps shape and define an emerging community, with involvement in inspiring, fun events and chances to meet artists, musicians and scholars from all over the world.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborate remotely with the Advisory Board, using email, Skype and social media
- Draft an event plan and budget for approval by the Advisory Board
- Arrange and book all elements of the event, including venue, catering, decor, entertainment, etc.
- Help promote events
- Incorporate some aspect of ritual and theater into each event
- Create an atmosphere for the event according to themes set forth by the Advisory Board
- Participate in concept and development of future event themes
- Manage an event volunteer team
- Recruit event volunteers
Requirements:
- Ability to dedicate at least 10 hours per week during the event planning phase, increasing up to the event
- Experience organizing events
- Experience with nonprofit fundraising
- Ability to attend the January event in the San Francisco Bay Area (travel costs are not covered at this time)
- Familiarity with any of the academic fields of cognitive science, consciousness studies, religious studies, psychology, mythology, anthropology, ritual studies, theater and spirituality/religion, mythic studies
- Enthusiasm for any aspect of ritual arts
You will report directly to the Brand Director, who sits on the Advisory Board. The Society for Ritual Arts is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We publish a semi-annual, peer-reviewed journal, Coreopsis: Journal of Myth & Theater.
