The Call: After The Eclipse Solar, lunar, annular, penumbral… anywhere in time and space or the Other Realms of Faery and Dreams.

The moment has passed when the moon, covered by shadow, turns red or darkness enveloped the sun revealing the cosmos beyond. The planetary shadow is gone and the orb is revealed once again. The day resumes and the people look once again upon the world. They pack up their belongings and slowly, the chatter of conversations are taken up where they left off.

Tomorrow the ordinary day after the eclipse begins.

Or does it?

What do we want?

Roses & Wildflowers’ editors are looking for all types of fantasy and science fiction, and, occasionally eerie tales and horror: dark fantasy, cosmic fables, reimagined fairy-tales and folklore, alternate histories, tales told by the campfire – be it on a distant world or in some imagined place beyond a door or after a journey across the cosmos. Give us hard science fiction, time travel yarns, distant galaxies, future scapes, or magic, shapeshifting denizens of Faery, add a little hope, a few shivers, a steampunk adventure, or a noir tale in dark alleyways in a place we haven’t been before.

But! Your story must include the aftermath of an eclipse. That cosmic event that fills us with awe and wonder, be it lunar, solar, annular, penumbral or totality in all its glory.

Hard sells:
Graphic violence.

Sword & sorcery and space operas. We aren’t against them, but they are a hard sell.

Just do not send us:
…pornography
…gratuitous graphic violence or abuse regarding any vulnerable group. By which we mean  flying body parts, self harm, or medical procedures (even by aliens) that have no purpose in the story except grab the editors.
…revenge or splatter fiction
…mainstream literary fiction
… graphic or non-consensual sexual encounters.
… Revenge porn.
Ritual poetry.
Allegory.
Obvious polemics.
Apologetics concerning colonialism
Reprints of any kind.
A rehash of Tolkien, Martin, CS Lewis, Hemingway, Austin or any film ever made.

Note to Artists and Musicians: This call is open to you as well. We can work with jpegs and audio files. Please send a query to [email protected].
