You’re looking out your window so hard
High as the blue sky and over the Spring rains.
We look and wait and watch.
We pace and move, we laugh and sigh.
We smile at bird songs as they flit by.
Like every Spring, looking to Summer.
Like every Spring we look to our Summer.
I wrote these words in March, 2020 after taking a walk at a local Massachusetts Audubon Society Sanctuary. It was very early on in the Covid 19 Pandemic but we already felt the strangeness of staying at home most of the time and mainly viewing the World through the window. Soon the Audubon Society itself would be closed and make the world seem smaller and more unsettled.
I put a picture from the Audubon Sanctuary with the ‘Out through the window’ words on FaceBook and a few friends responded. They asked if these were lyrics to a song. It was very early in the Pandemic of 2020 and I felt as if I did not want to give this disruption any more credence than I had to by recognizing it with a song….But I kept on feeling one thing in particular. I felt how Nature continued on as it always had done; the birds were singing and building nests, the rain was falling and the days were lengthening into Summer. In the midst of so much upset and turmoil so many normal, natural things were still happening. Could I capture that in a song? And could I make it up-lifting?
The song ‘Through Your Window’ bears little resemblance to the original words but Time will do that.
You’re looking out your window so hard
I can see you’re longing for this World (This poor world)
You’re watching and you’re waiting long days.
I can see you’re hoping for good news. (It’s old news)
Will it come from the bright blue sky
Will it come from the falling rain
While we pace and laugh and sigh out loud.
While songbirds sing like they always do.
While lovers break their hearts again.
While this whole World just overwhelms you.
Even on your darkest night you should know you’re not alone.
You should know someone will hold your hand.
You’re stuck inside your lonely home now,
I can see you’re pushing back the Night. (This long night)
The way you read or bake or sew
You will fight your demons ’til daylight. (This hard fight)
When your rooms are closing in
Good dreams will bring you back again.
Where you see your folks and long lost friends.
Where songbirds sing like they always do.
Where lovers bring their hearts to mend.
Where this whole World welcomes you back again.
Even in your darkest night you should know you’re not alone.
You should know someone will hold your hand. (Repeat)
Coda:
Take your time it just comes once.
Give your love it’s all you own.
Take your time it just comes once.
Give your love it’s all you own.
